Freedom of the press
Freedom of the press is important because should be able to know what is going on in the world around them. For example in some countries freedom of the"press can lead you to jail a writer went to jail just because he was speaking that the government was like a "weapon" to the people. John Peter Zenger was printed a newspaper called NEW YORK WEEKLY JOURNAL and he criticized the governor,William S . Cosby it accused the government of rigging elections among other things . John Peter Zenger was taken to jail. As you can see freedom of the press is very important to know what is going on in the world and with journalist we will always know what is going on all around us.
Censorship
If I were a journalist and the government tried to stop me from writing the truth, I would feel angry because the government should let us have freedom of the press and write whatever we want and share with the people. I would respond by saying"The people in New York City should know the truth about you as the government of New York City". Government, you should let the people of New York City know the truth about you and stop making State-run media and stop censorship that you are a great government when you are stealing money.
Journalists as purveyors of Information Part 1
The purpose of why we have journalists in our world is that without them, we would not know about life changing effects. For example there might be a WORLD WAR III, but we might not know about it if it was not for journalists. Like Thomas Jefferson said, he explained that between government without a newspaper V.S newspaper without a government, he would rather pick a newspaper without a government but then we would have no laws in society. But if you have to pick the first one, the problem is government could lie about him/her and we would not know about the truth about the politicians, and attacks. Also the power of words can bring down an entire law, for example when Martin L. King Jr. did his famous "I have a dream" speech, it took down the laws about segregating blacks and whites.
Journalists as purveyors of information Part 2
The kinds of rules or ethical decisions that journalists need to make when they are reporting news is they need to make an ethical decisions on how they are going to come off as a nervous journalist or a confident journalist. A rule that a journalist needs to follow is not saying wrong information that is not true. For example, there is a flooding in Santa Ana and 30 homes are destroyed but the journalists say there were only 15 homes destroyed so the other people might be misled. Another rule that journalists need to follow is make enough time and not take shortcuts or else the newspaper will turn out bad. Those are the ethical decision and the rules that journalists need to follow.
Information requires verification to be effective
I think it is important to fact-check as a reader and consumer of news and media because if our teacher says, "go and see if this statement is correct," then we would have to do fact-checking. Also if we are going to be a journalist when our boss says," I want you to fact-check this article that is going to be on the newspaper," then you have to spend your time fact-checking. If you don't know how then you are going to post a untrue article that might anger some people. The last one is when you are the reader, you need to fact-check the article because maybe you find out that the article is wrong. You can write a letter to the journalists telling them the article was wrong and they should change it before it is to late. That is why fact-checking is important and these are my reasons why I think that.
Break out EDU
Today we did a game called "Break out EDU" and we went into groups and had to open locks to solve mysteries about a missing senator. Then me and my group tried to open a lock but we got angry and some of my teammates forced the case open, they broke the case and we had to wait 5 min. in order to keep on going. In the end, we did not get to break out but we had a idea on how to do it but time ran out then we have to leave everything behind, then we went back to the classroom. Those are some of the important details about what we did today in the Game Break Out EDU.
"The Panama Papers" Whistleblowers Part.1
The contexts of revealing information cold be dangerous because it might not be wise to share SOME of the information on Wiki leaks. A whistleblower" is a person who exposes any kind of information or activity that is deemed illegal, unethical, or incorrect within an organization that is either private or public". A whistleblower is important in journalism because the journalists can expose the truth to the public and save people from danger. For example, a bakery had to shut down because they found cockroaches in bread. In this case, a whistleblower exposed the issue. This is what a whistlebower does and how can it be dangerous but good in some ways. Whistleblowers are important in journalism.
"The Panama Papers" Whistleblowers Part.2
It is important to publish highly-sensitive materials for the world to see because the public can be aware to what is to come next. Also, we need show the world the highly-sensitive materials because we can learn if we can trust the person or not for example, Edward Snowden had many points of view when he was called hero: a whistleblower, a dissident, a patriot, and a traitor. As you can see, people can have many points of view. It is important to put out there the highly-sensitive materials because we might find a clue about an unsolved mystery and it might have a lead to somewhere or someone. As you can see it is important to share highly-sensitive materials with the world for these reasons.
Nixon v. Journalists
If I was a journalist for the New York Times and I uncovered top secret information about the government I would share the information to the public here are my reasons why. The government is not following the first commandment that clearly said that all people have freedom of the press. Also I understand that I might endanger a small group of people but it is better than never, ever exposing the truth then we might never know. As you can see these are the reasons why we should post the top secret information on the New York Times and let the public know what the is doing government.
Journalism and mistakes
It is important to provide accurate information that does not contain mistakes. It matters a lot for the readers or the viewers that they can trust the newspaper or the newspaper online that provides them with information. Here is a example of why it is important to give accurate information. A blogger on Facebook posted that Facebook leaks your information such as passwords. People panicked and even began to delete their Facebook accounts. Some began to protest about Facebook when really the whole thing was a lie. Publishing accurate information matters a lot because we, as the public, should be able to trust the news sources. Another example of losing credibility is Brian Willams from NBC Nightly News. He said he was close to where a bomb went off in Iraq. In reality, he was about 20 miles away. He was fired from his job . This is why I think it is important to provide accurate information and why it matters a lot for the viewers or the readers.
